Corralejo: the name means “small corral” where livestock was kept. Corralejo is an ancient fishing village with a modernised town centre and was the first touristic place on Fuerteventura to be developed. It still is one of the busiest tourist areas on the island, during the day and du-ring the night. You may split Corralejo into 3 main areas: the north with its old town centre and closest to the harbour, the centre that has been built during the 70’ties and the south which has been developed after 2000. The Old Town is a pedestrian area and the Music Square, Calle La Iglesia and Muelle Chico are host to many bars and restaurants. In the centre of the town you have the main street with a handful of short side streets which contain many shops, cosy bars and fine restaurants. Close to the Centre of Corralejo you have two small beaches which are ideal for children. In the South of Corralejo there are beautiful beaches with plenty of sports and leisure possibilities. The dunes (a national park) are world famous and are one of the must-see items of Fuerteventura. The island of Lobos can be visited to enjoy nature, tranquillity and the small beach.

Puerto del Rosario: For shopping there is of course LAS ROTONDAS, the commercial centre with underground parking. But if you prefer to do window shopping in the street, then we suggest to go strolling in the Avda 1er de Mayo and Avda Secundino Alonso. Here you will find a mixture of shops, bars and restaurants. Costa Calma: has been built from scratch. The first hotel was built in 1977, but the real boom started only in 1984, after completion of the main road through the resort. Costa Calma has different “centres” which are surrounding individual Shopping Centres and all of them have their particular atmosphere. In almost each of them you can find a good choice of restaurants, bars and shops. Thanks to effective water recycling, the resort has become a green area where it is nice to stroll through. A fine walk (2,5h one-way) goes from Costa Calma to La Pared and starts close to the petrol station. And at low tide you can walk on the beach from Costa Calma to Jandía. Every Sunday and Friday is “market day” at the North entrance of the village. Most famous is the area for its spectacular beaches and the yearly surfing contests at the Playa de Sotavento.

Fuerteventura is about 20 million years old and is the oldest formation of all Canary Islands. It is geographically twinned with Lanzarote as both are on the same plateau with only 40-50 metres of sea depth between them.
Fuerteventura, like all other Canary Islands, is of volcanic origin. The first eruptions were well below sea level and the formations were subsequently pushed up. These early eruptions show the typical gentle slopes of the Betancuria Massif. Later eruptions – above sea level – have the traditional “volcano-like” shapes. The latest eruption on Fuerteventura was in what is now La Oliva, about 5.000 years ago.
The first inhabitants of Fuerteventura are believed to be of North African origin but, according to recent genetic research, there were several immigrations of at least three types of human races. Significant exploration of the island began in the 15th century with Jean de Bethancourt and Gadifer de la Salle.
Fuerteventura – at that time only the North – was developed for tourism as from the early 1970´s. The South followed about 10 years later.

Tomatoes from this island are considered to among the most flavoursome in Europe and used in many renowned restaurants on the continent.

Queso Majorero is an absolute must to try. There are 3 major classifications: “Tierno” (soft), “Semi-curado” (medium-aged) and “Curado” (aged). There are also variations with peppers, Gofio, oil, etc.

Aloe Vera from Fuerteventura is one of the best of its kind. Fuerteventura offers the best conditions for the cultivation of Aloe Vera. Look for local products with a high concentration and vending places that offer you information about the plants. Don’t go for the cheap stuff.

Local fish from Fuerteventura is a great opportunity to enjoy absolutely fresh and tasty fish. The ultimate dish is a “Pescado a la Sal” for min 2 people.

Papas arrugadas are wrinkled potatoes to accompany fish or meat dishes. You eat them with the skin.

Salsa Mojo is a mixture of olive oil, parsley, dried peppers and a lot of garlic. If it is too strong for you, then scoop of the oil and spread the oil onto your bread.

Tapas are small dishes to share or to eat alone. In this way you can have the pleasure of tasting several preparations without stressing your wallet.

Gofio is the local name for flour made from roasted cereals, like wheat, barley or certain varieties of maize. Gofio is a highly versatile product and is very rich in vitamins, proteins, fibre, and minerals. Try the Gofio mousse as dessert.

Olive oil: since a couple of years, some local farmers have started to plant olive trees and they are now harvesting the first significant crops. Thanks to the particular soil elements, the oil is of premium quality and a good souvenir.
